AN OBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF PERIOD PAIN

I suggest that the pain of dysmenorrhea (due to a blocked cervix) is similar to the pain of a blocked bladder.

That could be experimentally induced by inserting a catheter tube into the bladder and expanding the catheter balloon to anchor it in place. The outlet could then be corked or securely blocked to prevent urination and the person should then drink an ample quantity of water. Two litres would be enough to fill the largest of bladders.

After a period of time the bladder would fill and begin to feel overful and distressed and eventually go into a violent spasm in an attempt to overcome the blockage. If the blockage was maintained there would be an interval of several minutes and then it would spasm again, and this would continue at intervals of several minutes with the distress and pain increasing each time, and the blockage should be maintained for at least 15 more minutes or for as long as the person wishes to endure it. A series of bladder spasms may be followed by profound exhaustion which may last for several hours, or up to 2 days.

Any gynecologist who wishes to gain an objective assessment of the experience could easily subject themselves to such an experiment. M.B.
